Tips for Applying

10 Tips for Staying Sane While Filling Out College Applications

1. Keep a Calendar. Write down all your important dates on the same calendar.

Organize! Make sure you have all your documents in one place. Keep things like report cards, transcripts and test scores all together – you’ll be referring to them often.

3. Stay Ahead of the Game. Nothing causes stress more than a last-minute deadline. Ask early for letters of recommendation (a month ahead, if possible). Allow enough time for your essays to undergo several drafts.
4. Use the Common Application. A school or university's Common Application form is usually available online.  Over 300 schools offer online application though their Common Application.  What a time saver!
5. Proofread. Never count on spell-check alone! Before you submit, proofread your application carefully. Have a friend or parent look at it with fresh eyes as well.
6. Make Copies. If you’re working on paper, it’s always a good idea to keep a clean copy of the blank form, just in case you make a mistake and need it again. And when you are done, be sure to keep a copy of the completed application for your files. If you’re working on-line, always keep a print-out of your final application.
7. Attend Events. There are many workshops, college fairs and other free events that can help you as you apply to college. Check out the ones in your area.
8. Talk to People – especially people who have gone through the application process themselves. They can help you out with tips of their own.
