A native of Utah, I lived in Grantsville until, upon graduating from Utah State University, I moved to California and then to Texas. I spent the first few years of my career in the aerospace industry working on products such as the Space Shuttle main engines , the F-16 Fighter and other advanced tactical aircraft. Switching gears, I spent several more years working in the oil industry for Halliburton’s Dallas Manufacturing Center where I had the privilege of working in a different type of world-class manufacturing environment. My technology education, particularly welding engineering technology, prepared me for numerous challenges and opportunities, including returning to Utah to teach welding technology at CEU. I believe in the power of education and demonstrate that belief in the classes I teach and the classes I take as a doctoral student.
What is my instruction style? I am convinced that reward is proportional to effort. In other words “you’ll get out of it whatever you put into it.” Consequently, I focus on three areas:
Unfortunately, our fast-paced, superficial society produces students that want an “instantaneous education”, often with very little effort on their part. Students with that mindset will not do well in my classes. On the other hand, students with genuine interest and a reasonable work ethic generally thrive.
What does the future hold for all of us? Job competition is coming from many fronts: automation (such as robots), information systems (such as the internet), the guy down the street, the guy in Florida, and perhaps most threatening, the millions of people across the globe that would work day and night just for a chance at the luxuries that we tend to take for granted. We are now a global economy and like it or not, we as a society and we as individuals are competing with the rest of the world to maintain our standard of living. The best strategy for countering such global threats is being more educated and skillful than the competition. Be able to run/program automated systems, be computer (information system) literate, have technical skills (such as welding) and a well-rounded education. Our global economy is powered at the speed of the internet and change is happening faster than ever. My fear is that people will wake up one morning and realize that we (again as individuals or as a nation) are on a slippery slope that leads to 3rd world conditions. “I may be paranoid, but that does not mean that somebody is not after me.” -Unknown.
