Deseret News Highlights USU Eastern’s Satellite Centers
The empty vistas and rugged canyons of southeastern Utah don't stand in the way of student opportunities for a college education.
Returning to school decades after starting, is never an easy task. Add to that the challenge of earning a college degree in the remote region of Monument Valley and you will get a notion of what Brent Denney is up against.
His story is told by Deseret News reporter Celia Baker as Denney talks about the doors opened to him through the often unsung academic offerings available through Monument Valley and Montezuma Creek learning centers, both part of the USU Eastern Blanding Campus satellite system.
“Other than USU Eastern's satellite campus in Blanding, there are no college campuses within 150 miles of southeastern Utah,” Baker writes. “Students from the area who want a college education at a traditional campus must pay for living expenses away from home in addition to tuition.”
Baker reported on the leadership role Utah State University plays in the distance learning field.
“USU's Logan campus is connected to 25 remote campuses and education centers across about 3 million square miles,” she writes. “About 12,000 USU students across Utah videoconference to see and hear their professors in real time.”
