History

The SUN Center was established in May of 1993. The Center began as a small group of students and now has grown into hundreds of projects, thousands of volunteers, and hundreds of thousands of community service hours.

The College of Eastern Utah, now Utah State University - Eastern, was the first two year college in the state of Utah to have a Service-Learning Scholars program. This program allows students who achieved two hundred hours of volunteer service and eight hours of academic service courses to graduate with special recognition. Along with an honor cord, their diplomas will reflect Service-Learning distinction. At commencement a presentation of the Val J. Halamandaris Caring Award is given to recognize one student who has shown intrinsic commitment to voluntary service.
