Upward Bound is a federally funded grant program designed to provide low-income and first-generation high school students with academic, cultural, and personal support for the purpose of increasing high school graduation, college enrollment, and lifelong success.

The Upward Bound Mission

The purpose of Upward Bound is: to help high school students develop their highest potential and capabilities; to increase academic skills; to increase college success; and to help students develop the confidence, drive, and determination to contribute to society. 

Upward Bound will provide students with academic, cultural, and personal support throughout the academic year and within a six-week summer component.

Who May Apply for Upward Bound?

Students in 9th and 10th grade who attend one of the target schools (Carbon High School, Pinnacle Canyon Academy, Emery High School, and Grand County High School) and are seriously considering attending college may apply to the program.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
  • Neither parent has a four-year college degree.
  • Must meet current U.S. Department of Education family income guidelines (low income).
  • Must have a sincere desire to go to college and be willing to work toward that goal.
  • Must commit to spending some summers at the USU Eastern Summer Component.

Once we've determined that you are eligible, you will need to complete an application. Strong candidates will be interviewed by an Upward Bound representative in your school. You will be notified in May if you have been accepted into the program.

When and How Should I Apply?

Most recruiting takes place in the fall but continues year-round. Teachers, guidance counselors, parents, and community members may refer students to Upward Bound.
