Utah Career Center Apprenticeship Courses
Center for Workforce Development
Utah State University Eastern Center for Workforce Development is offering apprenticeship programs in conjunction with the Utah Career Center. The Utah Career Center is an independent trade school that prepares adults for fulfilling employment as plumbers, pipefitters, welders, and HVAC technicians.
The Utah Career Center (UCC) works in partnership with the Utah Mechanical Contractors Association and UA Local 140 labor union to provide employment opportunities for apprentices to “earn while you learn.”

FALL SEMESTER
Plumbing, Pipefitting, and Welding (PPW)
I-B Plumbing, Pipefitting, and Welding (PPW)
USU | 270 completion hrs.
Begins September 14, 2026 | $638
Learning modules core to the plumbing, pipefitting, and welding trades will include the operation of pumps and steam systems, design and maintenance of hydronic systems, and welding essentials—such as welding safety, welding symbols, welding processes, and basic metallurgy.
II-B Plumbing, Pipefitting, and Welding (PPW)
USU | 270 completion hrs.
Begins September 14, 2026 | $638
Plumbing, pipefitting, and welding apprentices will learn the water supply process, utilizing IPC standards; drainage system design, operation, and troubleshooting; and advanced SMAW welding techniques. The modules for this course serve as the keystone from prior knowledge to more advanced learning.
III-B Plumbing, Pipefitting, and Welding (PPW)
USU | 270 completion hrs.
Begins September 14, 2026 | $638
Learning will focus on tube bending using trigonometry and layout techniques germane to the plumbing and pipefitting industries. The advanced welding modules will require the development of pipe welding skills in varied diameters and positions.
IV-B Plumbing, Pipefitting, and Welding (PPW)
USU | 270 completion hrs.
Begins September 14, 2026 | $638
The final semester of the PPW apprentice program includes learning about medical gases, residential plumbing, and advanced welding that will yield specific UA welding certifications. All PPW apprentices are expected to complete modules designed to prepare the apprentice for DOPL and industry tests and licensure.
FALL SEMESTER
Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R)
I-B Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R)
USU | 270 completion hrs.
Begins September 14, 2026 | $638
Apprentices will learn and demonstrate skills with the design and maintenance of hydronic systems and the operation of pumps and steam systems and basic electricity—including fundamental principles of Ohm's Law, types of circuits, proper diagnostic techniques, and troubleshooting of common electrical problems found with HVAC/R components.
II-B Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R)
USU | 270 completion hrs.
Begins September 14, 2026 | $638
Apprentices will learn theoretical and practical application of chillers as well as introductory techniques in operating variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems. Learning experiences will include classroom presentations linked to relevant shop activities.
III-B Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R)
USU | 270 completion hrs.
Begins September 14, 2026 | $638
Learning will focus on tube bending using trigonometry and layout techniques germane to the plumbing and pipefitting industries. The advanced welding modules will require the development of pipe welding skills in varied diameters and positions.
IV-B Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R)
USU | 270 completion hrs.
Begins September 14, 2026 | $638
The final semester of the HVAC/R apprentice program, learning about advanced electrical systems and advanced air conditioning systems. All HVAC/R apprentices are expected to complete modules designed to prepare the apprentice for industry tests and licensure.
