Exams for Credit

The following exams are offered at the USU Eastern Testing Center. These are exams that can be completed to earn college credit hours.

Language Credits for Spanish, German, French, and Russian (CAPE)

The CAPE (Computer Adaptive Placement Exams) are designed to measure your current skill level and place you in the correct course according to your skills.

Purchasing Language Credits

You will receive PASS credits on the courses you qualify to purchase.

    • You must be a fully registered USU student to buy the credits, and the credits are good until you either transfer or graduate.
    • Students who qualify at the 2020 level may purchase the lower-division credits (1010-2020) at the cost of $500 dollars for all 16 credits (20 credits for Japanese courses).
    • Students who qualify at the 2010 level may purchase the lower-division credits (1010-2010) at the cost of $400 dollars for all 12 credits (15 credits for Japanese courses).
    • Students who qualify at the 1020 level may purchase the lower-division credits (1010-1020) at the cost of $300 dollars for all 8 credits (10 credits for Japanese courses).
    • Students who qualify at the 1020 level may purchase the lower-division credits (1010) at the cost of $200 dollars for the 4 credits (5 credits for Japanese course).
    • Spanish, French, German, and Russian exams can be taken at the USU Eastern campus. Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic tests are given at the Logan campus. Please contact Jasmine Morales.

General Information:

    • You must have a USU A# to take the test.
    • You must be a fully registered student to buy credits.
    • If you transfer from USU, you cannot come back and buy the credits because you are not fully registered. You would need to register for a class and pay for it, then you could buy the credits.
    • Fully registered means you need to be registered for at least one USU class (doesn't have to be a language class) and attending a class. This class needs to be paid for, then call Jasmine Morales at (435) 797-1209 to purchase the credits.
    • You may take the exam up to three times, but you must pay $35 for each test.

  • Testing:  30-minute to 1-hour online test.

College Level Exam Program (CLEP)

College Level Exam Program (CLEP) exams allow students to earn college credit by examination. Students may earn semester hours in general education breadth areas and additional credits in course-specific subject areas. All CLEP hours are reported as "pass" credit and will not affect GPA.

CLEP Information

  • Cost: $30 to USU Eastern Testing Center, payable at the Cashier's window in the One Stop Student Services Office.
    Plus an additional fee payable to CLEP.
  • Register: Call (435) 613-5325 to register.
  • Scores: Available shortly after the exam is complete. College composition scores require approximately 3 weeks.

Foreign Language Achievement Test (FLAT)

The Foreign Language Achievement Test (FLAT) provides students with the opportunity to receive up to 16 semester hours of university credit by examination.

Taking a BYU Language Placement Test
The BYU FLATS test is only offered at USU Eastern for USU students. If you need to take one of the above tests, order the test online at flats.byu.edu: Click on "Online Tests," then "Register for a Test." You will pay for the test at this site and tell them where you would like to take the test (USU Eastern Price Campus). You will be asked for the following information:

BYU will send you two emails. The first is the receipt that you have paid BYU for the test. The second email has the password you will need to bring with you to the test—this is important. If you don't see the second one, it sometimes goes to your junk mail. As soon as you receive the emails from BYU, you can call 435-613-5325 to set up a 2 1/2-hour test. Appointments for the FLATS test can start from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To buy lower-division credits after taking the BYU Language Test
After you have taken the BYU FLATS test and received your test results, please call or email Jasmine Morales (435) 797-1209, jasmine.morales@usu.edu to buy the credits. (You must get at least 12 credits on the results of the test in order to buy the 16 credits of lower-division credit.) BYU credits are Pass/Fail; they do not come with a grade. These credits will be treated like transfer credits. After receiving the form from Jasmine, take it to the registration office.
*NOTE: 12 Pass credits from BYU are equal to 16 Pass credits at USU.
